What is a 'Local Dental Committee' or 'LDC'?

LDC's were set up in 1948 in England and Wales, becoming Statutory bodies under the 1977 NHS Act. (In Scotland while health boards do consult LDCs, the role of the LDC does not have a statutory basis.)

There are approximately 122 LDC's in the United Kingdom. LDC's represent dentists that hold an NHS list number of the Primary Care Trust / Health board within the LDC's area. Also we represent PDS practitioners, assistants and deputies provided they have expressed a wish to be represented by the LDC and also private practitioners.

The members of the LDC are elected by dentists to represent the interests of those dentists. PCT's or health boards now have to consult with the LDC on matters of local dental interest. LDC's will also make nominations to or may be consulted about membership of certain committees, including:

Dental discipline committees.
Denture conciliation nominees, which deal with appeals against decisions of the Dental Practice Board.
In some areas, Primary Care Trusts have invited an LDC nominated dentist to sit on their Professional Executive Committee.

This website exists to keep dentist members updated with the activities of the Gwent LDC, and encourage discussion.
